## Fi1m on Álvaro Morte

> Álvaro Morte plays men whose plans are better than their nerves, and does it with his hands and his glasses rather than his voice. The Profesor in *Money Heist* is the part he was built for; the question since has been finding another.

What Álvaro Morte does best is think in front of a camera. In *Money Heist* (2017) his Profesor has planned a raid on the Mint to the minute, written the rules down for a crew who will break every one of them within a day, and still cannot order a drink without adjusting his glasses. Morte plays the mind and the body as two men who happen to share a suit. The mind is ahead of everyone around him; the body would rather be somewhere quieter. The performance is built from small habits, not speeches, and that is why the character holds.

Nothing in the route suggested it. He started in Spanish television in 2002 with small parts, *Hospital Central* among them, then spent years in daily soaps, *Amar en tiempos revueltos* and *El secreto de Puente Viejo* (2014–17), the kind of work that teaches an actor to hit a mark quickly and not much else. Álex Pina's heist serial came straight after and made him known far beyond Spain. Since then the work has gone abroad: a lead in *Mirage* (2018), Logain Ablar in *The Wheel of Time* (2021–23), the priest in *Immaculate* (2024), and a West End debut in *Barcelona* the same year.

The Profesor remains the thing to watch, and the reason is Itziar Ituño. His scenes with her Inspector Murillo are the best written in the show, two tired, capable people flirting while both of them lie, and Morte is never better than when he has to keep the plan running behind his eyes while his face does something else. By the end of the first season we found we were fond of a man whose whole job was to deceive a police officer we also liked, and it was the hesitations that did it, the half-second he takes before each untruth as if checking it against the rulebook. The later seasons are longer and louder, and a character made of quiet does less well in them.

He has said he builds a part entirely from the script: "I never look into my own history." You can see it. In *Immaculate* his Father Tedeschi is gentle and reasonable, which is the correct way to play him, and there is not a gesture out of place; there is also nothing beyond what the film asks, and the film, for most of its length, does not ask much. Morte is drawn to careful, clever, slightly odd men with something behind the courtesy, and he is good at them. The risk, which he has acknowledged himself, is that they are all cousins of the same man. The stage debut suggests he knows it. The part he needs now is one where the plan is still bigger than the person, and there is no vault at the end of it.
