Amma Asante is a British filmmaker, screenwriter and former actress. Born on 13 September 1969 in Lambeth, London, to Ghanaian parents, she trained at the Barbara Speake Stage School and began her career as a child actress in the BBC series *Grange Hill*.

She wrote and produced the 1998 BBC Two series *Brothers and Sisters*. Her feature directorial debut was *A Way of Life* (2004). She is known for directing the films *Belle* (2013), *A United Kingdom* (2016) and *Where Hands Touch* (2018), and episodes of the series *The Handmaid's Tale* (2019) and *Mrs. America* (2020). Asante was appointed MBE in 2017 and has been chancellor of Norwich University of the Arts since 2019.
