## Fi1m on Amy Brenneman

> Amy Brenneman is the actor you do not notice acting. In *Heat* she makes a small part opposite De Niro feel worth the film's time; in *The Leftovers* she is one of a company that, from its second year, is as good as television gets.

Amy Brenneman does not look as though she is acting. That sounds like faint praise and is the opposite. Most performers, put in a room with Robert De Niro, do something to be noticed; in *Heat* (1995) she plays Eady opposite him and simply behaves, and it is one reason the film's long stretches away from the cops and robbers feel like time well spent. She has said that De Niro taught her ease in front of the camera, and that "authentic screen acting is not about performing as much as being." Watching her, we believe it.

She came from the stage, having co-founded the Cornerstone Theater Company while at Harvard, and the ensemble habit stuck. Her first big screen part was Janice Licalsi in *NYPD Blue* (1993–1994), which made her a name in series drama. Then *Heat*. Then, unusually for an actor of her generation, she co-created, produced and starred in *Judging Amy* (1999–2005), loosely based on her mother's work as a judge. After it came Violet Turner in *Private Practice* (2007–2013), Laurie Garvey in *The Leftovers* (2014–2017) and, more recently, *The Old Man* (2022–). Along the way she has made three films with Rodrigo García and one with Brad Silberling. It is a television career with a great film near the start of it.

The film is the place to start. What got to us in *Heat* was not the gunfire but the loneliness: Michael Mann gives the pursuit room for damaged relationships, Elliot Goldenthal's score keeps the quiet passages uneasy, and the picture ends up sadder than any of its set pieces. That sadness needs people around the edges who are worth the camera's time, and Brenneman, with Val Kilmer, Diane Venora and Ashley Judd, supplies it. At 170 minutes the film can afford them, and it spends the time well.

*The Leftovers* is the other one to see, with a warning. The first season is hard going; from the second year it is as good as television gets. We should be honest that the reason we would tell you to stay is Carrie Coon, not Brenneman, whose Laurie Garvey is a central part across all three seasons but not the performance we would send you to it for. That is not a complaint. Being one voice in a company is what she does, and in a show about people who have been left behind it is the right instrument.

Where she has been the whole show, as in *Judging Amy*, the material has been less reliable than she is: the family tensions the series ran on were familiar, even when her handling of them was not. She plays strong, complicated, morally uncertain women, and she plays them as though nobody is watching. Start with *Heat*. Then give *The Leftovers* two seasons and see whether you notice her. You probably will not, and that is the point.
