## Fi1m on Amy Hill

> Amy Hill has spent four decades playing the grandmother, the boss or the neighbour for a scene or two at a time, and giving each of them a temper or a joke of her own. Small parts, carefully made, and nearly all she has been offered.

Watch for the woman at the edge of the frame who has decided she does not approve. In *All-American Girl* (1994) she was Yung-Hee Kim, the outspoken grandmother in the first network sitcom built around an Asian American family, and she learned Korean to play her. That is the Hill method in one line: take the part everyone else would phone in, work out who the woman actually is, and let her interrupt.

She came to it late and sideways. There was stage work in San Francisco and improv through the 1980s, then Los Angeles from about 1986, and the break with Grandma Kim did not arrive until 1994. What followed was less a career than a long list: recurring parts, guest parts, voice parts, the old Asian lady in whatever was shooting that week. She has said she passed on the ones with nothing in them. "If they were giving me a character that was one-dimensional, I'd pass on it. If I was just a joke, I'd pass. But if they had a personality, then I was fine because I could create a character." Whether every casting director offered her the choice is another matter.

The two titles of hers we have reviewed show the shape of the problem. In *Enlightened* (2011) she is Judy Harvey, the HR executive whose face does not move while Laura Dern's does everything, and our review of that series, which we rated highly, is about Dern and Mike White and does not stop for her. We remember her anyway: we sat waiting for the face to give something away and were unsettled, in the way the show wanted, when it did not. In *Lilo & Stitch* (2025) she plays Tūtū in a remake we found tamer and longer than the 2002 cartoon, in which she had voiced Mrs Hasagawa, the fruit vendor. Twenty-three years between the two, and both times she is the neighbour. *Magnum P.I.* (2018) has given her the longest run, as Kumu, the cultural curator and matriarch of the house, and *50 First Dates* (2004) the widest audience.

That is the trouble with a working life like this one. Nobody reviews the neighbour, so a body of work built entirely from neighbours goes unreviewed, and the record we can point a reader to is two titles in which she is not the point. Start with *Enlightened*, where she is not the point either, and notice how much of each scene she takes without appearing to want any of it.

Hill has appeared in recurring capacities on series such as *Magnum P.I.* (2018–2024) as Teuila "Kumu" Tuileta and *Just Add Magic* as Mama P.
