It carried her through five seasons of *Transparent*; film has mostly handed her parts that end before she can start. In the first episode of *Transparent* (2014), Sarah Pfefferman lets herself into her father's house with an old girlfriend and finds him in a dress. Jeffrey Tambor, as Maura, does not move. Landecker does the moving: shock, then recognition, then something close to relief, one after another across a face that has not yet decided which will win. Most actors would pick one and play it. Landecker plays the choosing, and that is the thing she does that others do not. She came to the screen late. Chicago stage first, with Steppenwolf and the Goodman, and only at around 38 a move to New York and then Los Angeles. Her first screen part of any size was Mrs Samsky in the Coens' *A Serious Man* (2009), played with seduction and detachment in the same slow line and a comic timing the stage had sharpened. Then Joey Soloway cast her as Sarah, and *Transparent* ran from 2014 to 2019 and gave her the time and space the theatre had. Sarah is not likeable, and Landecker never asks us to like her. The Pfefferman children are hard company, and meant to be; the series is honest about how selfish love can make people, and it is funnier and closer for it. We were moved more than we expected to be in that doorway, and it was Landecker's face Tambor was waiting on: whichever of those three feelings won would tell Maura what kind of life she was about to have. Landecker makes the contest visible without once naming it, which is harder than it looks. Film has been less generous. There is a supporting part in *Doctor Strange* (2016), and the nearest thing to a complaint anyone has made about her is that parts like it are brief. In *Missing* (2023), as the lawyer friend Heather, she is useful and underused, which is what a screen-bound thriller does with anyone over thirty. The problem is not what she does with the parts. It is the parts. So she has started writing her own. *For Worse* (2025) is her first feature as writer, producer and director, a romantic comedy drawing on her own life, and she has said that if it works at all it is because of what she learned on *Transparent*. We have not seen it. But five seasons of playing a woman deciding what to feel is an education in how a scene turns, and we would rather watch her use it than wait for someone else to write her another doorway. ## Biography Amy Landecker is an American actress.
