## Fi1m on Amy Seimetz

> Amy Seimetz is the person in the frame who has grasped the situation before anyone else, and she plays it small: a look through glass, a hand on a lock. Studio films keep giving her two lines. Independent ones, and her own, give her more.

In *Alien: Covenant* (2017) a man is dying on a table in a white room, and Carmen Ejogo is trying to hold him down. Amy Seimetz is on the other side of the glass, and she locks the door on both of them and reaches for a gun. We watched with our hands on the armrest, and it was her face rather than the thing on the table that told us how bad things were. Ridley Scott then gives her a line or two and moves on, which is the pattern in her studio work: she is the person who has grasped the situation first, and the script rarely stays with her long enough to find out what she does about it.

She came up in the late 2000s independent scene, acting, producing and working crew, three of them with Joe Swanberg. Critics first noticed her as Francine, a truck-stop waitress in *The Off Hours* (2011), and the next year she directed *Sun Don't Shine* (2012), a Florida thriller she also wrote, produced and cut. The lead in Shane Carruth's *Upstream Color* (2013) took her onto larger sets. Since then the two careers have run side by side: Faris in *Covenant*, Rachel Creed in *Pet Sematary* (2019), Mary Wertz in *No Sudden Move* (2021), and, behind the camera, episodes of *Atlanta*, *Outer Range* and *Mr & Mrs Smith*.

*No Sudden Move* is the performance we would point a stranger to. Three men with guns sit in her kitchen while toast is made, and Steven Soderbergh shoots it in flat morning light with no music. Seimetz plays Mary as a woman doing the sums, which child is where, what the men have and have not said, and never raises her voice. It frightened us more than a caper should. In *The Testaments* (2026) she is Paula MacKenzie, a Commander's wife who wants her stepdaughter married off quickly, and she gets the chill of it in a scene or two, but ten episodes is a long time to spend near a character the series is not interested in.

What she does not do is fill space. She does not play to the camera or signal what she is feeling, and in a crowded cast that can look like being underused when it is a choice. Directors who keep her on screen, Soderbergh above all, get more out of her than those who hand her a mark and a line. She was called an indie darling and did not care for it: "It's very cutesy and can be undermining. But the idea of 'independent,' I like that. It's pretty punk."

The studios will keep casting her, and they will keep giving her a line or two before the door shuts. *No Sudden Move* keeps her in the kitchen all morning, and that is the one to start with.
