A face holds still while a voice keeps talking. In a live-action film that is nothing; in animation it is a choice, because nothing on the screen moves unless somebody has decided to draw it moving, and a director who lets a character stand and speak for minutes at a time is declining a great many chances to be clever. That is the habit we notice in Amy Winfrey's work on *BoJack Horseman* (2014). Her episodes trust the script and the actor and step back. She has said so herself, of *Free Churro*: "This is an episode [in which] the writing and the voice performance are what shines, so I just didn't want to get in the way of that."

She came to it the long way round. She trained at the UCLA Animation Workshop and was an animator on *South Park* from its 1995 pilot, pausing her studies to work on the 1999 feature. Winfrey works the way the writers' room works, taking ideas from the whole team rather than stamping her own on top, so it is hard to point at a frame of *BoJack* and say that it is hers rather than Bob-Waksberg's or Hollingsworth's. Some directors would mind that. She appears not to, and she still teaches at UCLA, which suggests the next people who learn when to leave a face alone will have learned it from her.

Amy Winfrey is an American animator, writer, director and producer. She studied animation at UCLA and began her career as an animator on the early seasons of *South Park* and the 1999 feature *South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut*.

She created the web series *Making Fiends*, which became a Nicktoons television series in 2008. Winfrey directed episodes across all six seasons of the Netflix series *BoJack Horseman* (2014–2020), including the Emmy-nominated episodes "Free Churro" and "The View from Halfway Down". She has also directed on *Tuca & Bertie* (2019) and worked as a supervising producer on *Velma* (2023–2024). She is married to animator Peter Merryman.
