Given a whole ship, he shows us the monster too early and too often, and the fear leaves with the mystery. The best thing André Øvredal has done fits in one room. *The Autopsy of Jane Doe* (2016) has two men, a body and an autopsy room, and it frightened us badly, because for a long stretch he shows us the body and tells us nothing about it. He has said of his method, "I start with Hitchcock. I start with the idea that it’s all about information." That film is the proof: how little you need to show if you are careful about what you keep back. He arrived there by way of Norway. After short films and a low-budget feature, *Future Murder* (2000), came *Trollhunter* (2010), a mockumentary that puts Norwegian folklore in front of a found-footage camera and treats a fair amount of it as a joke. It was noticed well beyond Norway, and it set the pattern for what followed: an old story, a realistic setting, effects you could touch and a firm grip on what the audience is allowed to see. *The Autopsy of Jane Doe* was his first film in English. Then came the studios, with *Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark* (2019), a period piece built from children's horror stories, and *The Last Voyage of the Demeter* (2023), which he described himself as *Alien* on a ship in 1897. Guillermo del Toro has produced for him. In between he went home for *Mortal* (2020), which returns to Norse mythology. The ship is where the trouble shows. The Demeter is a proper vessel, well built and well acted, and Javier Botet's Dracula is unsettling whenever Botet himself is in the frame, crouched in the hold. Then the creature takes off, turns into a quick, weightless animation lit by nothing on board, and Øvredal shows it early and keeps showing it. Once we have had a good look there is nothing left to imagine, and the film has nothing to do but kill the crew one a night, on a schedule. The camera keeps going up to the open deck when it should be jammed below with the crates. A director whose whole method is control of information gave it away, and we spent the second half waiting rather than dreading. His studio films are more conventional than the ones he made at home, and the Demeter shows why: the bigger the space, the less he withholds. He is a director of small rooms who keeps being handed large ones. *Passenger* (2026) is next.
