He appeared in French, German and Finnish films and had an extensive stage career, performing regularly at the Théâtre national de Strasbourg from 1975 to 1984 and in productions across France and Germany. Wilms became known for roles in films by Étienne Chatiliez, including *Life Is a Long Quiet River* (1988) and *Tanguy* (2001), and by Patrice Leconte in *Monsieur Hire* (1989). He collaborated repeatedly with Aki Kaurismäki, playing Marcel in *La Vie de Bohème* (1992) and reprising a version of the character in *Le Havre* (2011). He received the European Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for the former. His other credits include *Europa Europa* (1990) as Robert and *Auntie Danielle* (1990).
