## Fi1m on Andreas Pietschmann

> Pietschmann is the man who walks in knowing more than everyone else and says as little as he can get away with. In *Dark* that was exactly the job, and he did it well; we have seen too little of the rest to say more.

He arrives in *Dark* (2017) with a hood, a hotel room and a book about time, and for a long while that is all we are given. Everyone else in Winden is running, shouting or writing things down; Pietschmann's Stranger has already done the sums and is waiting for the others to catch up. It is a part built on withholding, and he plays it without the smirk that usually comes with a character who knows how things end. We found ourselves waiting for his scenes in the first season, not because he did much in them but because, in a town where every adult was behaving badly out of fear, he was the only one who seemed to have a plan. Our own review called the people in *Dark* pieces on a board, and he is not exempt: the part gives him a function more than a life, and he fills the function.

He came to television late, by television standards. He trained in Bochum from 1993 to 1996 and spent the next decade on stage, at the Schauspielhaus Bochum and then the Thalia in Hamburg, before turning to film and television in 2007, the year a lead in the series *GSG 9* got him noticed at home. There were episodes of *Tatort* and *Polizeiruf 110*, the German crime series most working actors there pass through, and film parts before and after: *Sonnenallee* (1999), *Belle and Sebastian* (2013). Then Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar cast him as the Stranger across three seasons, and a working German character actor became a name people abroad could place.

Friese and bo Odar went back to him for *1899* (2022), where he plays Eyk Larsen, another man carrying information the series doles out slowly. We have not reviewed it and will not judge it here, but the casting tells you how he is seen. He has said as much himself: "I have a penchant for mysterious material because I like it when viewers are challenged." The risk for an actor of this kind is that the withholding becomes the whole performance. *Dark* protected him from that because the writing kept every promise it made; a lesser puzzle would leave him standing in a hotel room looking meaningful.

*Nuremberg* (2025), in which he plays Rudolf Hess, suggests he is at last being asked for something else: a real man in a real room rather than a figure in a hood. We would like to see what he does when he is not the one holding the book.
