## Biography

Ann Rutherford was a Canadian-born American actress who appeared in film, radio and television. Born Therese Ann Rutherford on 2 November 1917 in Vancouver, British Columbia, she moved to California as a child and made her stage debut in 1925. She began her screen career in 1935 with Waterfront Lady and quickly became a contract player at Republic Pictures, appearing in Westerns alongside John Wayne and Gene Autry.

In 1937 she signed with MGM, where she played Polly Benedict in twelve of the Andy Hardy films opposite Mickey Rooney. She was loaned to Selznick International Pictures for the role of Carreen O'Hara, one of Scarlett O'Hara's sisters, in Gone with the Wind (1939). Other notable credits include the Spirit of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol (1938) and Lydia Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (1940). Rutherford's career extended into television, with appearances in series such as Perry Mason and The Bob Newhart Show. She died on 11 June 2012 in Beverly Hills, California.
