> Anne Consigny is quietly forceful when composure takes effort. We value the restraint of her supporting work; our reservation is with casting that too often confines her to troubled wives and professional women under strain.

In *The Diving Bell and the Butterfly* (2007), Anne Consigny’s Claude has the professional poise of someone making an effort to keep her feelings in check. It is the sort of restrained playing we value in her: she gives a supporting part feeling without making a display of it. We were moved by Julian Schnabel’s film because Mathieu Amalric’s Bauby remains complicated rather than becoming easier to like for our benefit. Schnabel sometimes gets too absorbed in making beautiful images, but the performances give us people to attend to. Consigny holds her place among them.

*Not Here to Be Loved* (2005), with Consigny in the lead as Françoise, marked the turn after a sparse period of screen work. Steady supporting roles followed from the mid-2000s, often as wives or professional women under strain. Anne Consigny is a French actress. Born in Alençon, Orne, she began acting on stage as a child and later trained at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique and Cours Florent. She was a pensionnaire at the Comédie-Française in the early 1980s and made her screen debut in 1981.

She is known for her film roles including Françoise in *Je ne suis pas là pour être aimé* (2005), Claude in *The Diving Bell and the Butterfly* (2007), Elisabeth in *A Christmas Tale* (2008), and Anna in *Elle* (2016). She has also appeared in *36th Precinct* (2004), *Mesrine: Public Enemy #1* (2008), and *At Eternity's Gate* (2018), as well as television series such as *The Returned* (2012). Consigny received César Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

She is married to art critic Éric de Chassey.
