Born in Ossining, New York, she began her career as a child model and made her Broadway debut at the age of eleven. She appeared in supporting roles in several 1950s films, including *Bad Day at Black Rock* (1955) and *Blackboard Jungle* (1955). Francis is best known for her role as Altaira Morbius in the science fiction film *Forbidden Planet* (1956) and as the title character in the television series *Honey West* (1965–1966).
