She was born on 11 September 1909 in Manhattan, New York City, and died on 8 December 1988 in Los Angeles, California. She came from a theatrical family; her mother was actress and museum curator May Davenport Seymour, and her great-uncle was actor Harry Davenport. Seymour trained at the American Laboratory Theatre School and began her career with the Jitney Players. She appeared in Broadway productions including *At the Bottom* (1930) and *A School for Scandal* (1931), and was active in radio, notably portraying the title role in *The Story of Mary Marlin*. Her film debut was as Mrs. Lucy Stark in *All the King's Men* (1949). Other film roles include Amelia Tarbell in *Pollyanna* (1960) and a part in *Field of Dreams* (1989), released after her death.
