He was born on 31 January 1959 in Adelaide, South Australia. He played the role of Leon Zat in the 2001 Australian film *Lantana*, for which he received an AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. LaPaglia is also known for his performance as Jack Malone in the television series *Without a Trace* (2002–2009), for which he won a Golden Globe Award in 2004. His other screen credits include *The Client* (1994), *Road to Perdition* (2002) and voice roles in the *Happy Feet* films (2006, 2011). On stage, LaPaglia won a Tony Award for his performance in the 1997 Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's *A View from the Bridge*.
