## Biography

Anthony McCarten is a New Zealand writer, screenwriter, novelist and film producer. Born on 28 April 1961 in New Plymouth, he worked as a journalist before studying at Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington. He began his career as a playwright, co-writing the successful stage play *Ladies Night* (1987) with Stephen Sinclair.

McCarten is best known for his screenplays for biographical films, including *The Theory of Everything* (2014), for which he also served as producer, *Darkest Hour* (2017), *Bohemian Rhapsody* (2018), *The Two Popes* (2019) and *Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody* (2022). He received Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay for *The Theory of Everything* and *The Two Popes*, and won two BAFTA awards for the former.
