## Fi1m on Antoine Fuqua

> Antoine Fuqua is a sure handler of actors and physical threat, and we rate *Training Day* highly. He is less demanding of scripts, which too often replace difficult people with familiar action or a flattering portrait.

Denzel Washington's Alonzo turns humiliation into a teaching method in *Training Day* (2001), and Antoine Fuqua lets him enjoy himself. Ethan Hawke gives him a newcomer whose wish to learn makes him vulnerable to that charm. We felt uneasy watching Jake accept bullying as the price of being taken seriously. Fuqua allows Washington enough humour to make the officer's hold on him credible. It is gripping direction, even when David Ayer's screenplay begins to favour more ordinary thrills.

The music videos of the 1990s led to a feature debut with *The Replacement Killers* (1998), before *Training Day* brought the critical breakthrough. Action thrillers became the main business, including *Olympus Has Fallen* (2013) and *The Equalizer* (2014). Washington remained the important collaborator, returning for *The Magnificent Seven* (2016) and the three *Equalizer* films.

In *Training Day*, cinematographer Mauro Fiore gives the Los Angeles streets a gloss that suits Alonzo's appetite for attention, although some encounters need less polish. Naomi Shohan's production design keeps those surroundings credible. Fuqua keeps track of the people within these spaces, making the encounters dangerous without letting the style obscure the acting. The problem comes when Ayer's plot starts requiring implausible behaviour from men the actors had made convincing.

*The Equalizer 3* (2023) shows how useful his patience can still be. Washington's Robert McCall drinks tea on a café terrace, and Fuqua gives a stiff walk and a delayed smile time to register. The film is most interesting during these quiet stretches. Editor Conrad Buff IV cuts the fights fast and close, showing the damage more clearly than the movement. The violence becomes numbing, leaving Washington to sustain a film with too few new ideas.

*Michael* (2026) takes him into biography, with Jaafar Jackson's dancing giving the stage numbers conviction. Around those performances, John Logan's script supplies a tidy ascent and unusually detailed business scenes, without much curiosity about the man away from work. Fuqua directs it dutifully, accepting the flattering account rather than asking more of the material. Start with *Training Day* for Washington and Hawke, allowing for the script's disappointing turn towards conventional action.
