## Biography

Antonio Cánovas del Castillo de Rey (13 December 1908 – 13 May 1984), known professionally as Antonio Castillo, was a Spanish fashion and costume designer. Born in Madrid, he studied there and in Granada before moving to Paris at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. He worked as a diplomat and later as a designer for fashion houses including Paquin and Robert Piguet, and designed accessories for Coco Chanel.

Castillo designed costumes for films, the New York Metropolitan Opera and Broadway productions. His film credits include *Beauty and the Beast* (1946) and *The Yellow Rolls-Royce* (1964). For *Nicholas and Alexandra* (1971) he shared the Academy Award for Best Costume Design with Yvonne Blake. He received a Tony Award nomination for the 1959 musical *Goldilocks*.
