## Fi1m on Aparna Nancherla

> A stand-up who turned anxiety into a delivery, Aparna Nancherla speaks on screen as if apologising for the interruption. That level, worried voice has done its best work in animation, where there is no face to undercut it and the timing does everything.

Listen to Aparna Nancherla for a minute and you will notice she never raises her voice. The lines arrive level and slightly behind the beat, as if she had thought of them a moment ago and is not sure they should be said aloud. It is a stand-up's instrument, built for a microphone and a crowd of strangers, and her comedy has always been about anxiety, low mood and the suspicion that she should not have been invited at all. On screen she has mostly been cast as exactly that person: the awkward one at the edge of the office, the friend who says the true thing quietly and then wishes she had not.

She started in stand-up in Washington, D.C. and spent her first years in writers' rooms, on *Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell* and then *Late Night with Seth Meyers*. The turn came in 2017, twice over: Grace, the beleaguered HR executive in *Corporate*, and Hollyhock in *BoJack Horseman*, a voice role that ran across three seasons. *A Simple Favor* (2018) gave her a first feature, a supporting part beside Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, and since then the work has run mostly through animation, Moon Tobin in *The Great North* from 2021 among it, with an essay collection in 2023 and a stand-up special in 2025.

*BoJack Horseman* is where the voice found a character worth its while. Raphael Bob-Waksberg's show is about a man who has rehearsed his excuses so often he half believes them, and Hollyhock arrives late in it and is given a run of episodes the series takes as seriously as anything it does with its lead. Nancherla does not push; the worry is all in the pacing. We were caught out by how much those episodes got to us. A delivery that flat and unhurried ought to hold a character at arm's length, and instead it did the opposite, because every small pause sounded like someone deciding whether she was allowed to want anything.

*Hoppers* (2026), Pixar's beaver body-swap, uses her differently: as one of a supporting cast, with Sam Richardson and Eduardo Franco, who share out a good number of the sharpest lines between them. It is a reminder that she is a dependable comic voice in an ensemble, and also that features have not yet asked her for more than that. The reservation, such as it is, is one she would probably make herself. A persona this low-key and this anxious is a narrow one. It can read as a private joke rather than a shared one, and it needs a writer who understands that the quiet is the point rather than a problem to be solved.

That writer has so far come from television. She has said she liked that stand-up "was something you could do on your own terms", and the screen has not yet offered her the same deal. Until it does, start with Hollyhock, and keep an eye on the credits of animated films for her name; it tends to mean the supporting cast will be funnier than the plot.
