## Fi1m on April Grace

> April Grace makes professional competence worth watching. We value her grounded presence in ensembles, and *Magnolia* gives the clearest reason: she can put tough questions to a major star without making a show of it.

In *Magnolia* (1999), April Grace's reporter Gwenovier has questions for Tom Cruise, and she does not need to match his force to make them matter. Her firmness keeps the exchange from becoming another opportunity to watch a star perform. We felt some relief in her steadiness, because their scenes let us concentrate on two people talking in a film whose distress can be exhausting. Grace is worth watching for this ability to make a supporting character seem occupied with something other than supporting the lead.

Her early screen work included Transporter Chief Hubbell in *Star Trek: The Next Generation* (1990–1992). The significant turn came with *Chicago Cab* (1998), the independent film in which Paul Thomas Anderson saw her before casting her in *Magnolia*. Anderson gives her understated approach something substantial to work on: Gwenovier must establish enough rapport to keep asking difficult questions. Grace makes both parts of that job convincing, without treating professional determination as a character's only feeling.

*A.I. Artificial Intelligence* (2001) places her in Steven Spielberg's science-fiction fable in the supporting role of Female Colleague. We find the film deeply moving, despite its wandering story, but it would be an odd first stop for someone interested specifically in Grace. Its strongest claim on our attention is Haley Joel Osment's manufactured child and his hunger for love.

Her recurring employment as reporters, doctors, therapists and authority figures tells us where her grounded manner is most readily useful. There is a limitation here: roles built around competence can leave an actor with little else to play, however persuasively they do the job. Later work includes Rachel Bornholdt in *Whiplash* (2014) and the Arkham Psychiatrist in *Joker* (2019), continuing a career largely spent in supporting parts. Start with *Magnolia*, and give the person asking the questions as much attention as the person answering them.
