## Fi1m on Ardal O'Hanlon

> O'Hanlon's gift is innocence played dead straight: a man who hears every word, misses every meaning and never suspects it. It made Father Dougal one of the reasons *Father Ted* still holds up, and nothing since has asked as much of him.

On screen Ardal O'Hanlon does one thing better than almost anyone: he listens without understanding. As Father Dougal McGuire in *Father Ted* (1995–1998) he receives every explanation with the same open, hopeful face, holds it for a second and then says something that proves none of it went in. He is not stupid the way sitcom fools are usually stupid, with bluster and volume. He is quiet, loyal and quite certain the world is a kind place that will make sense eventually, and it never does, and he never minds. We laughed at Dougal, and then somewhere in the run we noticed we had started to worry about him, which is the trick. The innocence is played so straight it stops being a joke and becomes a person.

He came to it from stand-up in Dublin in the early 1990s, where he had co-founded the International Comedy Cellar and built an act out of deadpan delivery and observations that began sensibly and wandered off somewhere strange. Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews gave that persona a dog collar and an island, and it fitted at once. O'Hanlon has said of the part, "I just slipped into it very easily. It sounded so natural in my voice." It did. There is no seam between the man who did the clubs and the priest exiled to Craggy Island, and that is why Dougal never feels written.

What followed is the shape of a long working life rather than a series of turns. Six years as George Sunday, also known as Thermoman, in the BBC sitcom *My Hero* (2000–2006). Three series as DI Jack Mooney in *Death in Paradise* (2017–2020), the closest he has come to straight acting, though the detective still arrives at things sideways. Around those, an early film part as Mr Purcell in *The Butcher Boy* (1998), guest work as Eamonn in *Derry Girls* (2018), novels, documentaries and a stand-up career he has never put down. We have not reviewed the sitcom or the detective series, so we will not judge them at length; we will say that both cast him for the quality Dougal made famous rather than against it.

The complaint, which is fair, is that he has never once been unkind on purpose. The stand-up is gentle, the characters are gentle, the audience is never in any danger. That is exactly why Dougal works, and it is also why the parts since have been variations rather than departures. He is a comic actor who can make bewilderment look like a moral position, and almost nobody has tried to find out what else that face can do.

If you have only seen the priest, you have seen something that will not date. If you want to know what else he is capable of, the honest answer is that nobody has yet asked him properly.
