## Fi1m on Arianna Rivas

> Arianna Rivas can give a supporting character enough initiative to make a routine rescue plot briefly interesting. We rate that grounded presence, though *A Working Man* gives us more reason to recommend her than the film itself.

Jenny Garcia has some initiative, even in a rescue thriller that leaves little room for its supporting cast. In David Ayer's *A Working Man* (2025), Arianna Rivas gives the kidnapped woman more presence than the plotting usually allows such a character. We warmed to Jenny because Rivas makes her seem capable of acting for herself, rather than simply waiting for Jason Statham. That is a modest achievement, but a welcome one in a film dragged down by repeated fights and leaden dialogue.

Her physical preparation draws on gymnastics, dance, karate and boxing, and she handles demanding fight choreography while keeping the character's feelings clear. The useful thing is that the physical confidence supports Jenny's initiative rather than replacing it. Rivas and David Harbour, whose Gunny Lefferty supplies some comic ease, suggest how much more engaging Ayer's film might have been with more space for its supporting players. We cannot recommend the film, but neither performance deserves to be dismissed with it.

The earlier feature credits include the independent drama *The Harvest* (2023) and the comedy *Prom Dates* (2024); the clearer turn is towards action and horror in 2025. Scott Derrickson casts her as Mustang, the camp supervisor's niece, in *Black Phone 2* (2025). Her experience with horses gives her something practical to bring to Mustang's rural background. We preferred this film to *A Working Man*, chiefly for its grainy, skipping dream sequences. The heavy explaining remains a problem, and our enthusiasm for those sequences should not be mistaken for a verdict on her performance.

We would like to see what happens when a script sustains that initiative across a larger part. Jenny remains our clearest reason to follow Rivas: she makes a threatened supporting character worth watching for her own response, even when the film gives her too little room. Give her a character whose decisions occupy more of the running time.
