## Biography

Art Smith, also credited as Arthur Gordon Smith, was an American stage, film and television actor. Born in Chicago, he was a member of the Group Theatre and appeared in many of its productions, including several plays by Clifford Odets.

In films he usually played supporting roles, such as John in *Letter from an Unknown Woman* (1948) and Mel Lippman in *In a Lonely Place* (1950). He also appeared in *Body and Soul* (1947), *Ride the Pink Horse* (1947) and other 1940s productions. Smith was blacklisted in the early 1950s; his film work thereafter was limited, though he had an uncredited role in *The Hustler* (1961). In 1957 he originated the role of Doc in the Broadway production of *West Side Story*. He worked occasionally in television before retiring and died in 1973.
