## Biography

Sir Arthur Edward Drummond Bliss (2 August 1891 – 27 March 1975) was a British composer and conductor. Born in Barnes, London, he studied at Cambridge University and briefly at the Royal College of Music.

In the 1920s and 1930s he composed for the concert hall, ballet and film. His score for the film *Things to Come* (1936) was one of the earliest by an established composer for the cinema. During the Second World War he served as director of music at the BBC. After the war he resumed composing and was appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 1953. He was knighted in 1950 and received further honours including the Companion of Honour.
