## Biography

Arthur Laurents (1917–2011) was an American playwright, screenwriter, theatre director and film producer. Born in New York City, he began writing radio scripts after college and served in the US Army during the Second World War, where he wrote training films.

Laurents achieved success on Broadway with the books for *West Side Story* (1957) and *Gypsy* (1959). His screenwriting credits include *Rope* (1948), *Anastasia* (1956), *Bonjour Tristesse* (1958) and *The Way We Were* (1973). He wrote and produced the 1977 film *The Turning Point*, for which he received Writers Guild of America and Academy Award nominations.
