## Biography

Arthur Ripley (12 January 1897 – 13 February 1961) was an American film editor, screenwriter, producer and director. Born in New York City, he began his career as an apprentice at Kalem Pictures and later worked as a cinematographer and editor. He is credited as editor on *Foolish Wives* (1922).

In the 1920s Ripley joined the Mack Sennett studio as a comedy writer and collaborated closely with Frank Capra on screenplays for Harry Langdon films including *Tramp, Tramp, Tramp* (1926), *The Strong Man* (1926) and *Long Pants* (1927). He later wrote and directed short comedies with W. C. Fields and Edgar Kennedy.

Ripley directed the features *Voice in the Wind* (1944) and *The Chase* (1946). He helped establish the film programme at UCLA and returned to directing for *Thunder Road* (1958) at the request of Robert Mitchum. He continued teaching until his death in Los Angeles.
