## Biography

Arthur Wontner (21 January 1875 – 10 July 1960) was a British actor. He appeared on stage from 1897 and in films from 1915, playing a wide range of roles.

He is best known for portraying Sherlock Holmes in five films between 1931 and 1937: *The Sleeping Cardinal*, *The Missing Rembrandt*, *The Sign of Four*, *The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes* and *Silver Blaze* (also known as *Murder at the Baskervilles*). He also appeared as Embassy Counsellor in *The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp* (1943) and as an old gentleman in *Genevieve* (1953).

Wontner's son was Sir Hugh Wontner, a hotelier and Lord Mayor of London.
