## Fi1m on Ashton Kutcher

> Ashton Kutcher is an able comic actor whose lightness can make familiar sitcom material bearable. We rate his timing and willingness to commit, though the writing too often gives him too little to work with.

As Walden Schmidt in *Two and a Half Men*, Ashton Kutcher gives broad sitcom comedy a lighter touch, even when the next joke is easy to predict. He is good at keeping this sort of material from feeling like hard work for the performer. That ease has its uses, and we rate him as a capable comic actor. The difficulty is that the writing can seem satisfied simply to have him there, rather than finding something fresh for him to do.

Michael Kelso in *That '70s Show* (1998) established the familiar appeal: an amiable, dim-witted character played with timing and physical confidence. *Dude, Where's My Car?* (2000) carried that comic persona into films. The science-fiction thriller *The Butterfly Effect* (2004) and the biographical *Jobs* (2013) offered departures from it. His preparation to play Steve Jobs included studying mannerisms and making physical changes. There is no reason to treat the comic work as something he needed to outgrow.

When he joined *Two and a Half Men* in 2011, that lighter manner was useful, but it could not repair the programme's habits. Jon Cryer and the supporting cast also get laughs out of it; the sour treatment of women and the predictable situations remain. We were frustrated watching Kutcher here because his capable playing made the shortage of fresh jokes harder to excuse. Familiar characters need situations that test them, and too often this comedy settles for a broad insult delivered cleanly.

*The Beauty* (2026) gives him a different task as Byron Forst in Ryan Murphy's body-horror series. Alongside Anthony Ramos as Antonio, he commits to the excesses even when the programme cannot settle between black comedy and horror. Evan Peters supplies seriousness as Cooper Madsen, and Jeremy Pope helps keep the people interesting; Kutcher's willingness to go along with the stranger material is another reason the uneven series holds our attention. Its blunt satire and scattered storytelling still limit what the actors can achieve. Try it for the committed cast, provided the body horror is an attraction rather than an obstacle.
