Born Audrey Mary Totter on 20 December 1917 in Joliet, Illinois, she began her career in Chicago radio in the late 1930s before signing a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She made her film debut in *Main Street After Dark* (1945) and appeared as Madge Gorland in *The Postman Always Rings Twice* (1946). Totter became known for roles in film noir, including *Lady in the Lake* (1947) and *The Set-Up* (1949). She also worked extensively in television from the 1950s onward, with guest appearances in series such as *Perry Mason*, *Hawaii Five-O* and *Murder, She Wrote*. Totter married physician Leo Fred in 1953; the couple had one daughter.
