## Biography

Badi Uzzaman was a Pakistani-British actor. Born Mohammed Badi Uzzaman Azmi on 8 March 1939 in Phulpur, Azamgarh, British India, he moved with his family to what became Pakistan and graduated from Government College, Abbottabad, in 1959. He began his career as a radio presenter before moving into acting on Pakistan Television after its launch in 1964.

Uzzaman appeared in the 1984 Pakistani film *Malia*, which led to his seeking political asylum in the United Kingdom. He became a British citizen and worked extensively in British television and film, with roles including Anwar in the 1993 series *The Buddha of Suburbia*, a patient in *The Singing Detective* (1986), the Dealer in *My Beautiful Laundrette* (1985), Suzie's Father in *Torchwood* (2006), Mr Gupta in *Another Year* (2010) and the Chemist in *Eastern Promises* (2007). He died on 14 June 2011 in Lahore, Pakistan.
