## Biography

Bansi Chandragupta (6 February 1924 – 27 June 1981) was an Indian art director and production designer. Born in Sialkot, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan), he studied painting in Calcutta before entering the film industry.

He is best known for his long collaboration with Satyajit Ray, serving as production designer or art director on *Pather Panchali* (1955), *Aparajito* (1956), *The Music Room* (1958), *The World of Apu* (1959), *Charulata* (1964) and *The Chess Players* (1977). He also worked on Jean Renoir’s *The River* (1951) and films by Aparna Sen, Muzaffar Ali and others. Chandragupta received the Filmfare Award for Best Art Direction three times and was awarded the Evening Standard British Film Award posthumously in 1983.
