## Biography

Barbara Lane is a British costume designer. She began her career in London's West End theatre before joining the BBC in the mid-1960s. Early television credits included the science-fiction anthology series *Out of the Unknown*.

At the BBC, Lane worked on *Doctor Who* (1963), serving as costume designer on thirty-three episodes between 1971 and 1977. Her designs included the aliens Azal, Alpha Centauri and the Axons, and she redesigned the Fourth Doctor's frock coat in 1975. She also designed costumes for nine episodes of the first series of *Blake's 7* in 1978.

After leaving the BBC around 1980, Lane established a freelance career in fantasy and period productions. Notable credits include *Heat and Dust* (1983), *Willow* (1988), *Dungeons & Dragons* (2000) and *Frankenstein* (2004). She won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Costume Design for the miniseries *Ellis Island* (1984) and received a BAFTA nomination for *Heat and Dust*.
