In *Bitter Christmas* (2026), Bárbara Lennie's Elsa has lost her mother at Christmas and spends the weeks that follow making sure nobody around her has to worry. She goes through the motions, and she does it with great care, so that the people near her have nothing to attend to. Pedro Almodóvar's film is about a director who cannot finish a script, and it is slack through the middle, but every time it comes back to Lennie it steadies. She moved us more than the film had earned, and what did it was the care itself: a woman tidying her own grief away so that it will not be a bother to anyone.

That is her habit, and it has been for a while. She was on screen at fifteen in *No Pain, No Gain* (2001), was one of a crowd of young Spanish actresses in *Obaba* (2005), and played Cristina in Almodóvar's *The Skin I Live In* (2011). The turn was *Magical Girl* (2014), for Carlos Vermut, in which she played a woman called Bárbara whose reasons arrive slowly and never all at once. She has said Vermut would not tell her where the character came from, and the not knowing is in the performance; she plays it as a fact about the woman rather than a gap in the script. Since then she has been Amaia Marín in Rodrigo Sorogoyen's *The Realm* (2018), where she has little screen time and uses all of it, and Alice Gould in *God's Crooked Lines* (2022).

What she does is subtract. Where another actor would show us the working, Lennie holds still and lets the scene come to her, and she can hold a silence longer than most directors dare to hold a shot. It works when the director has built the film so that the withholding pays off later, as Vermut did and as Almodóvar, in the last half hour, mostly does. The risk is plain enough: cast as the enigma often enough and an actor can start playing enigma as a manner, and there are stretches of *Bitter Christmas* where the script gives Elsa so little that stillness is all she has left.

The Almodóvar connection matters to her, and she has said as much: being chosen for one of his films is not a small thing. On the evidence of Elsa, he chose well and then wrote her too little. Start with *Bitter Christmas*, since it is the film of hers we can point you to, and watch what she does at the edge of the frame when the plot has wandered off to fret about its own director. Bárbara Lennie is a Spanish actress. Born on 20 April 1984 in Madrid, she is of Argentine and Irish descent and lived in Buenos Aires until the age of six before returning to Spain. She graduated in interpretation from the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático (RESAD) and made her feature film debut at age fifteen in *No Pain, No Gain* (2001).

Lennie won the Goya Award for Best Actress for her performance in *Magical Girl* (2014).
