Barbara Sukowa is a German actress and singer. Born on 2 February 1950 in Bremen, she trained at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Berlin and began her career in theatre before moving into film and television in the mid-1970s.

She is known for her collaborations with directors Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Margarethe von Trotta. Notable early roles include appearances in Fassbinder's *Berlin Alexanderplatz* (1980) and *Lola* (1981), and von Trotta's *Marianne and Juliane* (1981) and *Rosa Luxemburg* (1986), for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. She has received three German Film Awards for Best Actress.

Later credits include *Europa* (1991), *Johnny Mnemonic* (1995), *12 Monkeys* (2015) as Katarina Jones, *Atomic Blonde* (2017), *Gloria Bell* (2019), *White Noise* (2022), *Air* (2023) as Kathy Dassler, and *Constellation* (2024) as Irena Lysenko.
