He made his Broadway debut in 1939 and appeared in more than 400 stage roles, having trained with the Shakespeare Fellowship Repertory Company in New York. His film credits included Towny in *Midnight Cowboy* (1969), Dr. Walter Gibbs in *Tron* (1982), Grandpa in *The Lost Boys* (1987), Aurelius Hogue in *Doc Hollywood* (1991) and Father Maurice in *Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit* (1993). He won the 1978 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for *Da* and reprised the role in the 1988 film adaptation.
