## Biography

Barré Lyndon was a British playwright and screenwriter. Born Alfred Edgar Frederick Higgs in London on 12 August 1896, he began his career as a journalist specialising in motor racing and as a short-story writer before turning to the stage.

His first play, *The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse*, reached the screen in 1938. After further stage success with *The Man in Half Moon Street*, he moved to Los Angeles in 1941 to write for film full time. His screenplays include *The Lodger* (1944), *Hangover Square* (1945), *The Greatest Show on Earth* (1952) and *The War of the Worlds* (1953). He was naturalised as a United States citizen in 1952 and also contributed to television series such as *The Alfred Hitchcock Hour*.

Lyndon died in Los Angeles on 23 October 1972.
