## Biography

Barry Hines (1939–2016) was an English novelist, playwright and screenwriter. Born in Hoyland Common near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, he worked as a teacher before publishing his first novel, *The Blinder* (1966).

He is best known for the novel *A Kestrel for a Knave* (1968), which he adapted with Ken Loach and Tony Garnett for the film *Kes* (1969). Hines collaborated with Loach on further projects, including the television drama *The Price of Coal* (1977) and screen adaptations of his novels *The Gamekeeper* (1980) and *Looks and Smiles* (1981).

His other notable work includes the screenplay for the television film *Threads* (1984) and contributions to the BBC series *Play for Today*.
