## Biography

Barry Letts was an English actor, television director, writer and producer. Born in Leicester, he began his career as a repertory actor after service in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, later appearing in theatre, films and television.

He moved into directing in the late 1960s after attending the BBC directors' course, with early credits including the Doctor Who serial The Enemy of the World (1967–68). Letts served as producer of Doctor Who from 1969 to 1974, overseeing most of Jon Pertwee's tenure as the Third Doctor and casting Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor. He also wrote several episodes, often in collaboration with Robert Sloman, and directed additional stories for the series.

Letts later produced BBC classic drama serials and returned to Doctor Who as executive producer for its eighteenth season in 1980–81. He directed episodes of EastEnders and other programmes before his death in 2009.
