## Biography

Barry Newbery was a British production designer who worked extensively in BBC television. He joined the BBC in 1957 after training in commercial art and earlier work designing exhibition stands.

Newbery is best known for his long association with *Doctor Who* (1963), on which he designed sets for 62 episodes across 14 stories between 1963 and 1984. He contributed to episodes featuring the first five Doctors and carried out the first significant redesign of the TARDIS in 1976. He specialised in historical stories and also worked on series including *Dad's Army* and dramas such as *The Lost Boys* (1978), for which he received a Royal Television Society award, and *Prince Regent* (1979), which earned a BAFTA nomination.

Newbery retired from the BBC in 1984. A collection of his on-set photographs from *Doctor Who* was published in 2013.
