## Biography

Basil Henson (31 July 1918 – 19 December 1990) was an English actor who worked in film, television and theatre. Educated at Malvern College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he served as a major in the British Indian Army during the Second World War before making his professional stage debut in 1946.

He appeared in numerous stage productions, including Shakespeare plays at the National Theatre and in the West End and on Broadway. His film credits include Alec Prosser-Jones in *Darling* (1965), Hacker in *Cromwell* (1970) and roles in *Dr. Crippen* (1962) and *Galileo* (1975). On television he played Dr. Abbott in the *Fawlty Towers* episode "The Psychiatrist" (1979) and Sir Horatio Manners in *When the Boat Comes In*.
