## Biography

Ben Bolt (1952–2025) was a British television director. He was the son of playwright Robert Bolt and trained at the National Film School.

His early credits included episodes of *Van der Valk* (1977) and *The Sweeney* (1978). He later directed episodes of American series including *Hill Street Blues* and *L.A. Law*. In the UK he worked on *Bergerac*, *Silent Witness* (1996), *Ashes to Ashes* (2009) and *Inspector George Gently* (2014).

Bolt directed 32 episodes of *Doc Martin* (2004–2011) and two episodes of the first series of *Downton Abbey* (2010). His later work included episodes of *Vikings* (2017) and *Outlander* (2018).
