## Fi1m on Ben Stiller

> Ben Stiller makes the effort to be liked or admired painfully visible, and often funny. We value the vulnerability beneath his awkwardness, though the films sometimes keep humiliating him after he has made the joke work.

Ben Stiller puts so much effort into posing in *Zoolander* (2001) that looking desirable becomes strenuous work. Owen Wilson's Hansel scarcely seems to try, which makes Derek Zoolander's determination funnier. We laughed at Derek's concentration, with Wilson making all that effort look unnecessary. Stiller directs himself well here: their rivalry sustains the comedy when the thin conspiracy plot gives them little help.

The mainstream breakthrough had come with *There's Something About Mary* (1998), playing Ted Stroehmann, a man who makes wanting to be liked look painful. His social awkwardness is recognisable beneath the broad physical comedy. We keep watching because Stiller allows Ted to seem vulnerable, even when another humiliation is plainly what the film has in mind. That repeated punishment can wear thin, but he gives us a reason to care about the man enduring it.

Wes Anderson's *The Royal Tenenbaums* (2001) gives him less noisy work as Chas Tenenbaum. Alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Luke Wilson, he holds back in a film whose decoration and mannerisms could easily encourage everyone to overdo it. His need for affection remains clear without a scramble for attention. We value that restraint: it suggests how much the broader performances depend on knowing what to withhold, although Anderson's crowded film does leave some supporting characters short of space.

His move towards television directing in the 2010s keeps that interest in uncomfortable people, though patience becomes a mixed virtue. In *Escape at Dannemora* (2018), he is more interested in what the three central characters want than in the mechanics of the prison escape. Patricia Arquette and Eric Lange make it worth staying, but seven episodes are too many. There is only so much time we need to spend watching people sulk or measure a wall.

*Severance* (2022) is the stronger recommendation for his directing, with a warning that its first season also takes time to gather pace. Stiller and Aoife McArdle let discomfort linger, while Jessica Lee Gagné's cinematography makes the office and the outside world feel firmly separate. Jeremy Hindle's production design makes the workplace familiar enough to recognise, but difficult to place in time. For Stiller the actor, start with *Zoolander*: Wilson gives his strenuous seriousness just the right amount of provocation.

## Biography
