## Fi1m on Benedict Wong

> We rate Benedict Wong for the dry wit and ordinary humanity he brings to men who are supposed to know the answers. The casting can grow familiar; the comic actor deserves as much attention.

In *Weapons* (2025), Benedict Wong plays Marcus, the headteacher with an empty classroom to explain. A class of children has vanished, and the part suits his ability to make an authority figure seem human rather than merely useful to the plot. We were frightened by the first hour because a whole class has disappeared and the adults left behind have no explanation. Zach Cregger tells the story in chapters, with editor Joe Murphy returning to scenes from different viewpoints, so Wong is part of a carefully assembled company. The pattern becomes predictable and the later noise and silliness diminish the fear, but casting Wong as a man expected to have answers makes sense.

The early work gives a less solemn picture: *Dirty Pretty Things* (2002) was a breakthrough, while the sitcom *15 Storeys High* (2002–2004) gave his comic timing room as Errol Spears. As Pete Cheng in *State of Play* (2003), he belongs to an ensemble we rate highly. Paul Abbott’s six-part thriller makes its newsroom convincing, and its actors are a large part of the pleasure. We occasionally wanted fewer complications and more time with the people following them.

Kublai Khan in *Marco Polo* (2014–2016) brought wider recognition, while Bruce Ng in Ridley Scott’s *The Martian* (2015) put him among the capable professionals of science fiction. *Doctor Strange* (2016) then made his dry authority useful to fantasy. As Wong, he helped reshape the character away from comic-book stereotypes, giving us more reason to welcome the familiar expert. These are sensible uses of his strengths, though we would be wary of mistaking repeated casting for all he can do.

As the detective Da Shi in *3 Body Problem* (2024), he brings wit and humanity to another brusque figure. We rate that ability to make a knowledgeable man worth spending time with, without requiring him to become agreeable. The danger is that dependability becomes the whole assignment, with too little space for the humour that the earlier comedy makes plain. For a less solemn introduction, start with *15 Storeys High*.

## Biography

Benedict Wong is an English actor. He was born on 3 July 1971 in Eccles, Greater Manchester, and studied performing arts at De La Salle Sixth Form College in Salford. He began his career on stage before making his screen debut in the early 1990s.

Wong's early film and television roles include Guo Yi in *Dirty Pretty Things* (2002), for which he received a British Independent Film Award nomination, and appearances in the BBC sitcom *15 Storeys High* (2002–2004). He later played Ravel in *Prometheus* (2012).

He gained wider recognition for playing Kublai Khan in the series *Marco Polo* (2014–2016), Bruce Ng in *The Martian* (2015), and Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from *Doctor Strange* (2016) onwards. Wong received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for his performance in *Nine Days* (2020) and appeared as Marcus in *Weapons* (2025).
