> Benjamin Stockham makes a sitcom child worth listening to before the script asks us to care about him. His warmth in *About a Boy* is persuasive; the writing gives him too little freedom.

In the early exchanges of *About a Boy* (2014), Benjamin Stockham makes Marcus seem pleased to be in David Walton’s company without making a great display of it. We were touched by their bond in the pilot because their pleasure in each other seemed unforced. Stockham gives us someone worth spending time with in his own right. That matters when the programme is so eager for us to approve of the friendship.

His early work included an infected child in *Quarantine* (2008), but regular television comedy gave him more sustained parts. He played Robby Gunderson in *Sons of Tucson* (2010) and Xander Gilchrist in *1600 Penn* (2012–2013), before taking the lead child role in *About a Boy*. *Sons of Tucson* called on physical comedy and unruly child energy; Marcus gave him a central relationship to sustain with an adult co-star. Later guest work included Alex Winthrop in *Gotham* (2017), alongside appearances across procedural and genre series.
