## Biography

Bernard Bresslaw (1934–1993) was an English actor and comedian. Born in Stepney, London, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art on a London County Council scholarship and won the Emile Littler Award as most promising actor. He began his career in radio and television, notably as Pte 'Popeye' Popplewell in *The Army Game* (1957–61), before appearing in numerous films and stage productions.

Bresslaw is best known for his roles in 14 *Carry On* films, including *Carry On Cowboy* (1965), *Carry On Screaming!* (1966), *Carry On Up the Khyber* (1968), *Carry On Camping* (1969) and *Carry On Doctor* (1967). He also played Varga in the *Doctor Who* serial *The Ice Warriors* (1967) and the Cyclops in *Krull* (1983). He worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, and appeared in other films such as *Jabberwocky* (1977). Bresslaw died of a heart attack in Regent's Park, London, shortly before a stage performance.
