## Fi1m on Bernard Hepton

> Bernard Hepton made authority felt without making a performance conspicuous. We value his quiet precision, especially as Toby Esterhase, and the way he holds his own beside Alec Guinness without competing for our notice.

Watch Bernard Hepton beside Alec Guinness in *Smiley's People* (1982): Toby Esterhase gets our attention without apparently asking for it. The complicated story benefits from having someone else worth following. We warmed to his performance because he kept us interested in the people when the plotting threatened to hold us at a distance. Hepton makes that effort easier without making the part feel larger than the series needs.

Television also gave him leading parts, notably the humane Kommandant in *Colditz* (1972) and the café owner and resistance fighter Albert Foiret in *Secret Army* (1977). His strong voice and firm bearing were well suited to such parts, where authority need not rule out kindness. Those 1970s leads were followed by prominent work in historical and literary adaptations through the 1980s and 1990s. It is worth remembering those leads before reducing him to a reliable supporting player.

*I, Claudius* (1976), with Hepton as Pallas, shows why the company around an actor matters. Derek Jacobi leads a drama whose wit makes its cruelty more disturbing, and the writing and acting remain persuasive despite the ageing sets. Some performances lean towards the stage, so we would not sell it as an evening of uniformly quiet acting. We recommend it more strongly than *Smiley's People*, although Esterhase offers the clearer introduction to what we particularly value in Hepton.

There is a telling detail in the two Esterhase performances: the received pronunciation of *Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy* (1979) becomes a subtler Eastern European inflection in *Smiley's People*. He changes the voice without making the adjustment the main attraction. His later work includes Mr Woodhouse in *Emma* (1996), another literary adaptation, but we would begin with the earlier television. For a first encounter, choose Esterhase and be prepared to follow the intricate plotting.
