Born on 23 February 1928 in Bolton, Lancashire, he died on 25 December 2014 in London. He began his working life as a journalist before national service and training at the Old Vic Theatre School. He made his film debut in *Carry On Sergeant* (1958) and appeared as The Bolshevik (also credited as Kuril) in *Doctor Zhivago* (1965).
