## Biography

Bernard Knowles (20 February 1900 – 12 February 1975) was an English cinematographer, film director, producer and screenwriter. Born in Manchester, he began his career as a newspaper photographer before becoming an assistant cameraman at Gainsborough Pictures in the 1920s and progressing to director of photography.

Knowles collaborated frequently with Alfred Hitchcock on British films, serving as cinematographer on *The 39 Steps* (1935), *Secret Agent* (1936), *Sabotage* (1936), *Young and Innocent* (1937) and *Jamaica Inn* (1939). After the Second World War he directed features including *A Place of One's Own* (1945) and *The Magic Bow* (1946), and worked extensively in television on series such as *Fabian of the Yard*, *Dial 999*, *Ivanhoe* and *The Adventures of Robin Hood*. He also co-directed the Beatles' *Magical Mystery Tour* (1967).
