On Led Zeppelin that produced a film worth seeing for the concerts and slightly too polite about everything else. The best thing in *Becoming Led Zeppelin* (2025) is that MacMahon does not cut away. A song starts and he lets it run to the end, which almost nobody making music documentaries now has the nerve to do, and the film is 122 minutes largely because of it. We came out of those stretches slightly deaf and happier than we had expected, because a whole performance, left alone, tells you more about four young men than an hour of them remembering does. His instinct is to trust the material over the talking heads. When the material is this good the instinct is right. It is the instinct of a researcher, and that is what he was first. *American Epic* (2017), a four-part series on the 1920s recordings that began American roots music, narrated by Robert Redford, took him and his producer Allison McGourty the best part of a decade, with Duke Erikson alongside them. The companion film *The American Epic Sessions* (2017) rebuilt the first electrical recording system so that living musicians could cut records on it. That is the whole method in one gesture: find the machine, make it work, film what comes out. He has called Led Zeppelin "the end of the American Epic era", and his film treats them as a subject for archaeology rather than gossip. The patience buys him things. *Becoming Led Zeppelin* is the first account of the band made with its blessing, developed over eight years, and it has footage nobody else has shown. The price is also on screen. The film begins with four boys and their record collections and stops at the end of 1969, with two albums out and America won, and nothing after that is mentioned. MacMahon would say the origins are the story, and he has made the same choice before, but a film that ends the moment things become difficult is a film that has arranged not to be argued with. His other weakness is a compulsion to illustrate. The early stretch, four childhoods told in turn, is padded with newsreel standing in for whatever is being described, and it is a long time before the four men are in the same room. When they get there, in London in 1968, the film picks up and stays up. McGourty has written all three works with him, and from outside it is impossible to say where one of them stops and the other starts; the fairest reading is that the method is theirs jointly. He has now filmed the beginning of American recorded music and the beginning of one enormous band. Whether he could be as interested in a middle, or an end, is the open question. We would watch him try, and we would watch more happily still if he let a talking head finish a sentence without a photograph laid over it. ## Biography Bernard MacMahon is a British film director and writer.
