## Biography

Bernard Newman (18 November 1903 – 30 November 1966) was an American costume designer. He served as head designer at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York and as head costume designer at RKO Pictures.

Newman studied in Paris and at the Art Students League. He began at Bergdorf Goodman as a window dresser before rising to head designer. He entered film work in 1933, designing primarily for RKO from 1934 to 1936. His credits include *Top Hat* (1935), *Roberta* (1935), *Swing Time* (1936), *Follow the Fleet* (1936), *Sylvia Scarlett* (1935) and *You Can't Take It with You* (1938). He created the ostrich-feather gown worn by Ginger Rogers in the "Cheek to Cheek" sequence of *Top Hat*. He later returned to Bergdorf Goodman while taking occasional film assignments, including at Columbia and Warner Bros. Newman was posthumously inducted into the Costume Designers Guild Hall of Fame in 2004.
